it’s my birthday

well, well…. i am writing two days in a row! can we believe it?

today is the seventh day of august in the year two-thousand seven. that would be 07-08-07, for those numerically inclined. this is a national holiday somewhere (i hope.)

i was born at 8:05 pm on this day in the last annum of the decade of the fifties. i have lived under the administrations of ten presidents, including the only president never elected to the executive branch, gerald r. ford. i have lived in six decades. i have visited thirty-six states. i have traveled to fourteen nations outside the USA and one territory, Puerto Rico.

i have met a host of celebrities including Bob Hope, Aretha Franklin, Pat Boone, Leonard Nimoy, Red Buttons, Robert Stack, John Elway, John Glenn, Henry Kissinger, Newt Gingrich, and others. i have crawled around in the attic of the Capitol Building in Washington, D.C., stood between Ed Bradley and Sam Donaldson at a White House press briefing in the Rose Garden with President Carter, and appeared on the national news.

i have started two churches, served four others, spoken to thousands of people and tried to write a book (ok, trying to write a book.) i know people who do not know me and am known by people i do not know. i have chased rainbows and climbed mountains. i even got altitude sickness on Pikes Peak. i have been with paupers and i have been with power.

i fathered three daughters and have survived thirteen cumulative years of parenting a teenager. i have run away from home and i have to home. i have tried to love and i have failed at love. i lived my growing up years with all of my grandparents and had three of them live into their 80’s with one of those living three days past 90.

i was an only child, and still am, and always will be. i am blessed to be tall. i am honored to be useful for eternal purposes. sometimes i feel clueless as to what the next step is, but i just go forward. i am glad to be here today and to experience the world around me. today, i am forty-eight years old. wow, that is officially late 40’s.

…and yet i still haven’t found what i’m looking for.
